The Town of Greenwich, CT itself is steeped in history. It was settled in 1640, and until 1650 was a manor under the protection of the Dutch. The Dutch ceded to the New Haven Colony its claim to the territory, and Greenwich was considered part of Stamford until it was declared a township by the General Assembly in Hartford, Connecticut, on May 11, 1665.
Greenwich, CT., the Gateway to New England, is an ideal suburban community. Located within an easy hour’s ride to New York City by train, automobile, or even motor boat, the Town of Greenwich possesses all the advantages of the city, while maintaining all the attractions of the country. Because of its location, Greenwich, CT played an important part in the Revolutionary War. One of the most interesting of local stories in connection with the Revolution is that of Israel Putnam, and his dash down the famous flight of stone steps on horseback to escape the British. Hundreds of motorists now pass daily down Put’s Hill, named after his famous exploit.
A curious aspect of Greenwich’s position in the southwestern “tail” of Connecticut is that by traveling north, south, east or west from any point in town, one will eventually reach the State of New York. Westchester and Putnam Counties lie to the north and west. Nassau County is directly south across Long Island Sound, and a long boat ride due east will land you on the northeast branch of Suffolk County, Long Island. Round Hill, with an elevation of more than 550 feet (170 m), was a lookout point for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The Manhattan skyline is visible from the top of the hill.
