Autumn Gourds, Getting Kids Involved in the Garden, & Workshop News!

Pumpkins & Gourds Have Arrived at McArdles!

Hello again, friends! We're having a bit of a hot spell in Greenwich, so it doesn't feel like Fall just yet, but the equinox is just a couple of days away! Time for cozy sweaters, pretty scarves, flights of leaves, and pumpkin everything. On the subject thereof, McArdle's now has gourds and pumpkins in stock! You can find everything from a standard carving pumpkin to wild looking gourds in our garden center. We even have a few prize winners if you love celebrating autumn with a huge pumpkin in the front yard. On a related note, we also have cornstalks and bales of hay to form the backdrop of your fall decor. So bring the kids around, and choose this year's pumpkins to kick off fall!
PS, We've also got a pumpkin painting workshop for kids on the horizon that I'll be teaching with my colleague, Bea! You can sign up to bring your kiddo by clicking the link in green above.

Getting Kids Involved in the Garden:

We know that many of you that love to work in the garden want to pass that love along to your kids too! We can help. Our own Christine McArdle wrote this article on how to make gardening a family affair, and we're putting that advice into practice. Next week, we have a a workshop for parents and kids in which your little ones will learn all about edible gardening. Together, you'll create a garden salad bowl with greens and veggies that you'll harvest later in the season. This workshop is a great way to start greening your kids' thumbs, and foster their love for plants and flowers. Plus, the workshop will include some educational bits about the benefits of growing your own food organically. Sign up now! Space is limited. Also, just know that the workshop could get a little messy. Be sure you dress for the dirt!

Workshop updates & News:

So, along with the workshops I've already mentioned, I have news about a couple of other workshops. First, we have another floral workshop coming up this week! This Saturday, 9/23, our head of Floral Design, Michael Derouin  AAF, AIFD, PFCI, CAFA, and our flower processor, Katie Barnaby will be leading a workshop on cut flower care. The pair of them will teach you everything you need to know about cutting, rehydrating, & caring for fresh cut flower stems. Whether you're recutting a bouquet from our flower shop, or pulling from your own garden, you'll learn how to properly cut and condition your stems for maximum vase life. You'll also learn the proper tools to use for the job (hint: it's almost always a straight-edged knife).
Moreover, if you happened to read last week's post about the Silk Scarf Dyeing workshop, know the date has changed. It's now happening on the 28th of October. If you still want to work with Monique, click here to register. Monique is a textile artist who creates pieces using natural dyes. In her workshop, she'll teach participants how to select the best materials for natural dyeing, and she'll use some McArdle's flowers in the process. To finish, participants will use what they've learned to create their own bundle dyed scarves.
So, get excited for fall, friends! We'll look forward to seeing you in our workshops and shopping the fall merch. As always, feel free to comment here. write to us ([email protected]), or call us (203.661.5600) with any questions!
by Justin Lievano who is eagerly anticipating the first rounds of pumpkin bread, apple picking, and more this fall!
